Holiday and Exceptional Medical or Personal Absence During Term Time
Absence during term time for the purpose of going on holiday is at the discretion of the school and discouraged because of the impact that such a break has on the student's education.
Under DfEE Circular 11/91 Education (Pupil Attendance Records) Regulations 1999, Headteachers may at their discretion grant leave of absence to enable a child to go on holiday with the family, but under no circumstances may this exceed 10 school days in any school year.
It is policy at Nova Hreod only to grant leave for family holidays in circumstances where this is unavoidable (e.g. an employer will only grant holiday time for a parent during particular weeks) and under these circumstances it is expected that the student will recover the work missed in their own time.
On an occasion where a student's leave extends beyond the permitted 10 days in a school year, the Educational Welfare Department of the Borough will be notified.
In exceptional circumstances students may be granted leave for medical or dental appointments or following the death of a close member of the child's family.
