The English Department
Welcome to the English department at Nova Hreod
The English department at Nova Hreod encourages an integrated programme of English involving Reading, Speaking and Listening, Writing, Drama and Media work. Each year pupils will be involved in activities, which reflect and support the National Curriculum Programme of Study for Key Stages 3-4 and will work towards the three attainment targets.
In Years 7-9 pupils will be regularly assessed in all 3 attainment targets. Part of the process will be the pupil’s self-assessment. Pupils will be required to compile a portfolio of work consisting of best pieces reflecting their ability and achievement in three areas.
In Year 10-11 all pupils will follow courses in English and English Literature and, wherever possible, programmes of work will be studied which will integrate these two disciplines.
In English, the scheme of examination will consist of
(a) A Terminal Examination (60%) (two papers)
(b) Coursework (40%)
In English Literature, the scheme of examination will consist of
(a) A Terminal Examination (70%) (one paper)
(b) Coursework (30%)
At the end of the course, all pupils who are entered for English and English Literature will achieve two grade awards. Those entered for English only will receive one grade.
