The Languages and International Understanding Department

 

Welcome to the Languages and International Understanding department at Nova Hreod.

 

In this School of Learning we aim to give pupils a real language learning experience. We do this through teaching them how to learn a language and by giving them as many opportunities as possible to meet or liaise with pupils from other countries.

 

The Modern Foreign Languages and International School of Learning are pleased to be able to offer French, German and Spanish at Nova Hreod. The language you study will depend on the year you enter the school. A second language is then offered to certain pupils in Year 8, depending upon progress shown in Year 7. Studying a language is currently an option in Years 10 + 11, but as a school, we promote the option of language learning through to Years 10 + 11, as it is a skill set which is an advantage in many career paths, as well as providing a linguistic challenge.

 

We also promote International understanding across the school and aim to bring pupils into contact with young people from other countries. We currently have links with two schools. The first is in Schwab-München, Germany. Pupils write letters in Year 7 to pupils in the German school and then have the opportunity to visit the school and meet up with their penpals in Year 9. We have visited the school twice in Schwab-München and their second visit to us will be in July 2007. We have also recently forged a link with a school in Poitier, France. Pupils in Year 8 have already exchanged letters and there are plans underway to do a history project involving both schools during the next academic year (2007-8). This will hopefully involve a visit to Poitier by Nova Hreod pupils.

 

We give pupils the chance to visit the country of the language they are learning and offer a 2 - 3 day trip to France and Germany in Year 7 and then a 5 – 6 day trip to either France or Germany in Year 9.

Ms Vizor

Learning Leader for Modern Foreign Languages and International Understanding. Teacher of German, French and Spanish.

 

Mrs Peach

Subject Leader for Modern Foreign Languages and International Understanding, with the particular role for the promotion of International Understanding. Teacher of German, French and Spanish.

 

Ms Oleskiewicz

Teacher of French and German. Ms Oleskiewicz is also the professional tutor for the school.

 

Mr Coates

Teacher of Spanish and French
