Learning Support @ Nova Hreod

The Learning Support Department

Welcome to the Learning Support department at Nova Hreod

In accordance with the 1996 Education Act and the Code of Practice of November 2001 on the identification and assessment of Special Educational Needs, this school supports the principle that all pupils are entitled to a broad and balanced curriculum including the National curriculum regardless of race, gender or disability.

It is a fundamental principle that all teachers are teachers of all children. The Learning Support team works with all staff to promote access to the curriculum so enabling all pupils including those with a range of special educational needs to benefit fully from their entitlement. It is recognised that this is best achieved in partnership between the teacher, parent and pupil.

According to the 1996 Education Act a pupil with special educational needs is one who has a learning difficulty that requires support that is additional to and different from that which is available in the normally differentiated curriculum.

A pupil has a learning difficulty if he or she has:-

  • A significantly greater difficulty in learning than the majority of children of the same age.

  • A disability which either prevents or hinders the child from making use of educational facilities of a kind provided for children of the same age in schools within the area of the local authority.

The Learning Support Team aims to:-

  • Support basic skills to enable all pupils to access the curriculum and make progress. This support may take place across the curriculum in conjunction with the subject teacher, or out of the mainstream class in the form of direct teaching in order to help pupils attain their potential.

  • Support and challenge staff in developing skills, strategies, resources and confidence to teach the full range of pupils.

  • Arrange provision for pupils with special educational needs that removes obstacles to their learning and encourages progress in educational development.
