Mathematics @Nova Hreod

The Mathematics Department

Welcome to the Mathematics department at Nova Hreod

Within the Mathematics faculty we aim:

  • To develop pupils’ confidence in mathematics and allow all to succeed at their highest personal level.

  • To ensure pupils are able to communicate effectively within mathematics, both orally and in writing.

  • To develop basic numeracy skills:- written, mental and with use of a calculator

  • To develop within pupils a logical approach to solving problems and extending this to encourage decision making through approaching each situation systematically.

  • To allow each individual the basic skills needed for their chosen career or entry into further education.

  • To allow pupils the opportunity to obtain the formal qualifications for their chosen career and to ensure that every pupil obtains some formal qualification within mathematics.

All courses within the faculty meet the requirements of the National Curriculum and follow the recommendations of the National Numeracy Strategy.

Pupils are set on entry to Year 7 using KS2 data and primary teacher’s recommendations. These sets will continue throughout KS3 and KS4. The setting system is very fluid and pupils may be moved up or down according to their performance in the continuous assessments throughout the course.

The Mathematics course prepares pupils for the London GCSE examination or the London Certificate of Achievement.

The GCSE course is split into 2 tiers of entry.
